The internal(implanted) device of the cochlear implant system.

The flat transparent part is the antenna. The magnet is in the center of the antenna. The metal box is the receiver/stimulator unit. The Electrode array is the long extension that ends with a spiral. The shorter extension is the ground electrode.

The cochlear implant is an electronic device that directly stimulates the inner ear and the auditory nerve with electricity to create artificial hearing. Cochlear implants consist of two essential parts. The internal device is surgically placed under the skin and into the inner ear. The receiver/stimulator part of the internal component sits in a bed created behind the ear on the skull, while the electrode array is advanced along the scala tympani cavity of the cochlea. These electrodes stimulate the auditory nerve with electricity to create the perception of sound. On the other hand, the external component is a device similar to a hearing aid that houses the battery and processor, collects sounds with a microphone and wireless connection features, and wirelessly transmits them to the internal component.

(English subtitle) Dr. Onur Ergün talks about the purpose of newborn hearing screening in Turkey, congenital hearing loss, cochlear implant application, the innovative cochlear implant project he carries out with his team, age-related hearing loss and ear aesthetics.
